Walking tour map around Ostrava

English version of map. Fiducia a spolek Za krásnou Ostravu, Ostrava 2018. With twenty walking routes we wish to offer and introduce attractive and popular places, picturesque spots, whole city quarters and localities in Ostrava, but also places that are generally not-well-known but nevertheless somehow remarkable or unique. Routes go through interesting and unusual areas in the city that cannot be found in tourist or educational guides (all routes are accessible by public transport and their length is from 5 to 20 kilometers). At each stopover this guide will provide information about local traditional cultural monuments and many other important but thus far little-promoted sights or buildings, their development, transformation and historical context. The map will lead us to many places with unique and unparalleled “genius loci“, to city quarters shaped by their industrial past and even to more rural areas. It will not leave out valuable natural areas and localities or many other extraordinary and unique characteristics of Ostrava.

Size B1, new. Text in English.  Translated by Tereza Řehová a Soňa Zapletalová, Richard Conaway and Renáta Tomášková. In 2017 Ostrava celebrated 750 years since it was established (according to written records), which seems to be the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors to better know this distinctive city more thoroughly. Of course this map is not (nor wants to be or could be) a definitive tool or manual on how to perceive or understand something as variable and original as the city of Ostrava. Rather it is some kind of a (hopefully useful) ladder or raft, helper and mediator – bear in mind that you must discover the important and deciding things on your trips and wanderings yourself. And you will find out that patriotism, a positive and considerate (also in the critical sense) relationship to the environment we live in and which we visit is built most intensively and completely on personal and internal experiences.  Dear explores, it is not at all important where you will go first, which route you will choose first and which one will be your last. Everything is possible and everything is allowed. Whichever option you will pick, these words by the writer and radio editor Josef Filgas will always be true: “You can travel the whole world, but if you haven’t seen Ostrava than you haven’t seen anything”.   We wish you pleasant travels.
